Unregistered Independent Church's Building Demolished by Chinese Communist Government

Authorities in China demolished a large church in the city of Linfen, Shanxi province on January 9, despite efforts by worshippers to halt the demolition.

According to witnesses, a large team of People's Armed Police and local officials detonated dynamite inside the building before using cranes and bulldozers to reduce it to rubble, reported The Guardian.

ChinaAid, a US-based Christian advocacy group, said local authorities planted explosives in an underground worship hall to demolish the building following, constructed with almost $2.6m (£1.9m) in contributions from local worshippers in one of China's poorest regions.

This is not the first time Golden Lampstand Church has faced persecution, however.

UG Christian News has learnt that hundreds of police and hired thugs smashed the same church and seized Bibles in an earlier crackdown in 2009.

United States government-backed Radio Free Asia says the church had come under strict monitoring by local authorities.

A pastor at a nearby church, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals said there were "more police than I could count" preventing a crowd on onlookers and worshipers from approaching the site.

China guarantees freedom of religion but authorities heavily regulate many aspects of religious practice. "Officials often prosecute such choices, however, and some of Golden Lampstand Church's leaders have been imprisoned for one to seven years, simply for serving at their church", the organization said in a statement on Tuesday.

An unidentified official told the state-run Global Times newspaper that the recent demolition of Golden Lampstand Church was because the church did not hold the necessary permits.

"It has now been demolished", a church member said. They were charged with illegally occupying farmland and disturbing traffic order by gathering together.

"China repeatedly cracks down on house churches, which are churches that refuse to register, often to opt out of government monitoring".

Evangelist Yang Xuan, the founder of the church, spent 3.5 years in prison and Yang Caizhen, his wife, was sentenced to two years in a re-education labor camp and beaten while incarcerated. In late December, local officials tore down a Catholic church that was built in 1999 in a small village in Shaanxi without giving a reason for the demolition.

Golden Lampstand Church in Linfen, Shanxi was once a 17 million Yuan ($2,603,380.00 USD) unregistered church, paid for completely by the Christians who attended it.

The church was completely paid for by the Christians who attended it, but has been under the control of the Chinese government since past year.
