United Nations envoy arrives in Sochi to attend Syria dialogue talks

Jaberi Ansari meets with China’s diplomat for Syria in Sochi

The congress' organizers also stated that there were Syrian domestic opposition from the Syrian People's Council, the Syrian major political parties, including Syria's ruling Arab Socialist Baath Party and the National Progressive Front, eminent religious leaders of all faiths, trade unions, arts organizations and national minorities among the congress' participants.

"It's quite clear that somebody there is obstructing the whole process and wants to sideline the importance of Geneva, the political process as a whole", al-Aridi said.

Western powers and some Arab states believe Sochi is an attempt to create a separate peace process that would undermine the United Nations' efforts while laying the groundwork for a solution more suitable to Assad and his allies Russian Federation and Iran.

However, Alwan said that opposition factions repulsed their attack, adding that talks about a ceasefire in Ghouta were a mere Russian media ploy. Turkey has poured troops into the north to fight Kurdish militias that have established regional autonomy and are seen by Ankara as a menace to its security. Turkey, Russia and Iran are also the guarantor countries that brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016, at the Astana talks, which ran parallel to the United Nations -backed discussions in Geneva to find a political solution to the six-year war. Consequently, Syrian opposition groups have refused to participate in Sochi.

"The fact that some representatives of the processes now taking place in Syria are not participating is unlikely to stop this congress from going ahead and is unlikely to seriously undermine the importance of the congress", Mr. Peskov said. The first group of the congress participants arrived in Sochi yesterday. The opposition scheduled a news conference for 0900 GMT on Saturday. Expect the Syrian National Dialogue Congress to be met with criticism of Russian hypocrisy and absence of recognition as a legitimate step in the Syrian peace process.
