ULA set for second attempt at spy satellite launch

The Delta IV rocket sits at Space Launch Complex-6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Thursday mroning awaiting liftoff for a National Reconnaissance Office mission

United Launch Alliance, which provided the rocket, reported that another attempt to launch will be made beginning at 1 p.m. Friday.

The ULA Delta IV rocket launch was canceled again on Thursday after several issues and anomalies with the rocket.

The launch had initially been planned for Wednesday, but was pushed to a day later due to high ground winds, base officials reported Wednesday.

Coverage of the launch Friday is scheduled to begin at 3:40 p.m. EST, 20 minutes before the launch window opens at 4 p.m. EST.

This will be ULA's first launch of 2018, and the 27th launch for the US National Reconnaissance Office, which operates a host of satellites used for intelligence gathering and surveillance. The forecast shows a 90 percent chance of favorable weather conditions for launch.

The Delta IV rocket will deliver a national security satellite into space as part of mission NROL-47 from the National Reconnaissance Office.

United Launch Alliance hopes the third time is the charm for their twice-delayed NROL-47 mission.

On Sunday, a top secret government spacecraft launched by SpaceX reportedly failed to achieve a stable orbit.

SpaceX claimed its rocket performed as expected, implying the blame for the Zuma mission lay elsewhere.
