'This is Us' just made a huge promise to the fans

This Is Us

Many people believe that Jack dies in the fire trying to save Kate's dog, but Reddit user Nickelback_Expert thinks the dog is a red herring. It brings up too many memories of her dad, and we'll get the final piece of that puzzle in two weeks. It's not the mystery of how Jack died.

- Everything must go back to the fire, right? Last week's installment ended with a major cliffhanger, as the family's home burned down.

"We're heartbroken over last night's episode, too!" the company responded to one commenter on Facebook. In order for Jack to get to Kate's room to help her, he may have lost his footing and fallen into the burning first floor. She suspects Toby has been hiding porn, but instead she finds out that he's been looking up dogs for her. (Frankly, the prospect of undercooked food is what gives me the heebie-jeebies even more, but the USDA has a handy tip sheet if you're in the same camp.) Good luck now, guys! "I'm the reason that he's dead". Ruthie, we're innocent until proven guilty. He records Kate singing so that she can see herself through his eyes.

The sneak peek for the Super Bowl episode flashed through a montage of emotionally-charged moments throughout the NBC family drama, including Jack telling Kevin, 'When I held you for the first time, right here in this hospital, it hit me like a bolt of lighting - you were my goal Kevin'. The NBC tearjerker has landed the coveted post-game slot for a special episode. And we all know what happens next. Anything involving Jack's death, you get those answers in this episode. As Jack cleans up the kitchen, he switches the crockpot on the counter off, placing a dish towel next to it. But WAIT. In a flashback, his neighbors delivered him that same crockpot years earlier, saying its "finicky" and he needs to just double check it's been turned off.

While that story has hovered over the season and preoccupied some fans, This Is Us delved deeper into its emotional family relationship stories before abruptly returning to the fire story at the end of last week's episode when a closing camera shot revealed that Jack and Rebecca had forgotten to buy batteries for the kitchen smoke detector. And it spreads quickly.

Before long, the small electrical fire swallows the Pearson home and works its way upstairs, where Jack, Rebecca, and Randall have retired for the night. The question of how exactly Jack dies still remains, though. There wasn't much evidence for this back then, but the theory existed nonetheless. Back in the first season, the Pearson kids, namely Kevin (Justin Hartley), Randall (Sterling K. Brown), and Kate (Chrissy Metz), were shown in present time to be affected by their father's death. For now, these are shots in the dark. Time will tell if they belong together, or if they should keep their magic in the past.

But as the episode closed and we saw the preview for the next episode, that will air on Sunday, Feb. 4 after the Super Bowl, we saw the home engulfed in flames.
