Swatting victim's mother to police: Please let me see my son

For those who came in late, a swatting prank is when someone calls up the cops armed response team and claims there is an active shooter in your house.

Originally reported by the Los Angeles Times, the caller, now in police custody, will be held without the possibility of bail, and will be pending an extradition hearing that could see him being sent to Kansas in order to stand trial.

Swatting is the act of making a false police report - usually of an urgent or violent crime - to lure law enforcement or SWAT teams to a location. Among the lines of inquiry investigators are pursuing is whether the 911 call was connected to an online-gaming dispute, police said.

The cases were consolidated and Barriss received a 32-month prison sentence after pleading no contest in May 2016.

Barriss was apprehended on Friday, The Independent reported, after allegedly placing the fake call from Los Angeles to police in Wichita claiming that he killed his father and was holding his mother and brother hostage inside 28-year-old Finch's home. Police said one of the officers on the scene fired a single shot - supposedly after the man reached toward his waist. He was actually unarmed.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday prosecutors are anticipating to file a fugitive from justice warrant against Barriss on Wednesday.

Lisa Finch said the Wichita Police Department hasn't been forthcoming with the family about her son's death. When police responded to the address allegedly given by Barriss, an officer shot and killed Andrew Finch. Finch was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

Finch said police had not only interrogated her family after the shooting, but officers had also taken belongings from her home, including cell phones and a computer, according to News 3 TV.

The deadly December 28 swatting was called in after two Call of Duty players allegedly began arguing over a wager match. The police department also released a video footage taken by a SWAT officer's body cam that showed Finch's death. "I heard my son scream, I got up and then I heard a shot", Lisa Finch said in the interview with reporters.

Barriss allegedly told police that Finch shot his father in the head and was now holding his mother and siblings hostage.

Following quickly after the Finch killing, another Wichita police officer almost killed a 9-year-old girl in her family's home Saturday night.

"The irresponsible actions of a prankster put people's lives at risk", he said. Police believe he may have placed the fake call.

The officer, a seven-year veteran of the department, is on paid leave pending the investigation.

But the victim's mother says police share the blame.

Apparently, the Call of Duty swatting incident was sparked by an argument over money (a minuscule amount too, apparently around $1.50).
