State Department of Licensing gives residents' personal information to ICE agents

Donald Trump

The news outlet reports that a Homeland Security investigation of multiple 7-Eleven franchises resulted in arresting nine owners as well as managers for conspiring to commit wire fraud, stealing identities and concealing as well as harboring illegal aliens employed at their store back in 2013.

Within 20 minutes, they verified that the cashier had a valid green card and served notice on the owner to produce hiring records in three days.

Homan did not say why ICE went after the Irving, Texas-based convenience store chain, which has 60,000 franchises worldwide and is famous for its Slurpee drinks.

Julie Myers Wood, former head of ICE during the Bush administration, said Wednesday's action showed that immigration officials were focusing their enforcement efforts on a repeat violator.

President Donald Trump ran on a pledge to crackdown on illegal immigration, and under his administration, ICE has increased efforts to arrest and deport those in the country illegally.

"7-Eleven Franchisees are independent business owners and are exclusively responsible for their employees, including deciding who to hire and verifying their eligibility to work in the United States", the company said. Last month, Trump commuted the 27-year prison sentence of Sholom Rubashkin, former chief executive of what was the nation's largest kosher meatpacking operation.

Devere said the department's practices are longstanding and stressed that they won't provide "database dumps" that allow ICE to do a search, for example, on everyone born outside the U.S.

Meanwhile the agents targeted about 100 stores nationwide, broadening an investigation that began with a 4 year old case against a franchisee on New York's Long Island.

It will only respond to requests about specific individuals when given a name and a crime that officers are investigating, he said. The company has more than 8,600 stores across the country.

"If I were the government, I would think about where are the low paying jobs that Americans don't want to do that we may have undocumented immigrants working there", said Richard Rawson, a business immigration attorney with Davis Wright Tremaine LLP in Seattle.

"We are going to be doing more of this work and dedicating more resources to make sure businesses are complying with the law", said Dani Bennett, an ICE spokeswoman. The clerk told agents he had no knowledge of documents required to prove eligibility to work and was asked to pass along brochures for voluntary programs aimed at better compliance with immigration laws.
