Somali, US commandos storm al-Shabab camp, rescue child soldiers

At least four al-Shabab militants were killed in Somalia in an overnight raid conducted by USA and Somali commandos, The Associated Press reported Friday.

"Among the dead were six Islamist militants and four children", he added.

The children were rescued during a night raid by the forces in a school at the Middle Shabelle region in Somali.

There was no immediate confirmation from the US side of the Thursday night raid on the village of Jame'a Jilay.

A second official confirmed the raid, which was carried out with the support of helicopters that later evacuated the young recruits.

Somali military and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) had recently stepped up the fight against Al-Shabaab since Mogadishu truck bombing in October previous year which claimed lives of over 500 people.

"In the morning, we saw Somali government troops in the village conducting house-to-house searches", he continued.

A pro-al-Shabab website said Somali and American troops "massacred" schoolchildren and their teacher. Al Shabab, an Arabic phrase that means 'the youngsters ', emerged in 2006 as a radical wing of the disappeared Council of Islamic Courts, was linked in 2012 to al Qaeda and struggles to impose an Islamic State based on the Sharia law.

Meanwhile, The US forces in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia conducted an airstrike against the Shabab on Thursday killing at least 4, US Africa Command said.

The U.S. military has carried out dozens of airstrikes in Somalia targeting al-Shabab, including several recent strikes that AFRICOM says hit vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and prevented attacks in Mogadishu.
