Sleeping More Could Help You Cut Down On Sugar And Lose Weight

A new small study from the United Kingdom suggests that may be the case. It will not cost a single penny. You should probably then just sleep a little extra.

According to the study, published today (Jan. 9) in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lack of sleep that is less than the recommended seven hours a night is linked to various health conditions, including obesity and cardiometabolic diseases which include heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Without a proper sleep which is minimum 7 hours, one can feel exhausted and out of sorts the next day.

Earlier research has shown that more than one-third of US adults get 6 hours or less of sleep each night - less than the recommended 7 to 9 hours, according to the study.

In the study, the researchers recruited 21 individuals to participate in a 45-minute sleep consultation created to extend their sleep time by up to 1.5 hours per night. There were no significant diet differences shown in the group who did not change their sleeping habits during the study.

All of the participants were asked to record their sleep and dietary patterns for seven days.

Experts said the "simple lifestyle intervention" led to healthier diets as people are attracted to junk food when exhausted and have less time to eat bad grub if they are asleep.

In the end, they got some unexpected outcomes.

Overall, the group ate an average of 10 grams less of free sugars a day as a result of sleeping longer.

Scientists from King's College London have discovered that people who sleep for longer are less likely to pick sugary treats, or reach for comforting carbohydrates.

The group has provided a chart which contained some suggestions to get better sleep.

Half of the study participants were then helped to achieve longer hours of sleep than they usually get by asking them to follow four personalised tips such as to avoid caffeine, not to go to bed hungry or too full and by establishing a relaxing daily routine.

86 per cent of the group presented with sleep suggestions managed to increase their time in bed by an average of 55 minutes and half boosted their sleep by 21 minutes on average.

They found that when a group of people who slept less than seven hours a night were helped to get an average of just 21 minutes extra shut-eye, they cut their intake of unhealthy "free", or added, sugars by nearly 10g - a third of their daily allowance.
