Serena's absence opens the door - Australian Open women's singles in Opta facts

Williams gave birth to Olympia in September - meaning she was already eight weeks pregnant when she won the Australian Open - and has been on the sidelines ever since. Now she's working her way back to tennis shape. If not, let me refresh your memory: This tennis phenom is a 23-time Grand Slam Singles and 14-time Grand Slam Doubles victor who won her most previous Australian Open title while eight weeks pregnant.

Days after Serena Williams revealed the harrowing medical scare she went through upon giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia, the tennis star's husband took to Instagram to talk about how the ordeal sparked personal fears and strengthened his view of the need for all new parents to get paid leave.

Serena pulled out of the Australian Open after losing a December exhibition match against Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi.

"She has set high goals for herself, one of which is beating Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slam titles" record and regaining the world no. 1 spot.

A casual reader of the only pregnancy book I suggest to friends, "Expecting Better", can easily see that pregnancy recommendations are often based on out-of-date information or the belief that US women about to become mothers are incapable of understanding moderation or ways to mitigate risk during pregnancy and childbirth.

Williams ultimately needed to have a filter placed in a major vein to stop blood clots from going to her lungs.

"Actually, I think having a baby might help", she said.

"Knowing I've got this handsome baby to go home to makes me feel like I don't have to play another match", she said. "I told you, I need a CT scan and a heparin drip", she said. "I want to teach her that there are no limits". "That's a different feeling for me".

In the cover story of Vogue's February issue, Serena, 36, reveals that her daughter was born by emergency caesarean after her heart rate dropped dangerously low.

The surgery went smoothly and the baby was healthy. The scan showed that several small blood clots had settled in her lungs.

She said that while she was pleased with her recovery and her progress, she was "not where I personally want to be". Furthermore, Serena's fresh C-section wound had popped open from her coughing fits caused by the pulmonary embolism, and when she returned to surgery, doctors discovered a large hematoma had flooded her abdomen - caused by the lifesaving blood-thinning medication she was taking for her blood clots.

She was not able to get out of bed for six weeks after she finally left the hospital a week after giving birth.

In the interview, Williams also discussed her rivalry with her older sister, Venus.

"To be honest, there's something really attractive about the idea of moving to San Francisco and just being a mom", she told Vogue.

"I'd like her to have a normal life".
