Sean Spicer: 'There were times where I screwed up'

Sean Spicer listens to a reporter's question during a June 20 briefing in Washington, when he was still the White House press secretary.

Spicer appeared to have a hard time adjusting to his role in the early aughts of President Donald Trump's administration, according to a bombshell new book on the inner workings of the White House.

"There were times where I screwed up, there's no question about it", he told conservative commentator S.E. Cupp during an interview set to air on her HLN show Thursday evening.

"There was an event where I was trying to talk about how evil Assad was and I screwed that up royally".

"Look, I'm a very self-critical person". Powers responded. "If you decide to work for somebody who's going to make you go out there and say things that aren't true, then I think you're held accountable for that".

Bannon's comments provoked intense backlash from President Donald Trump, who said his former adviser "lost his mind" and pretended to have special influence in order to help people "write phony books".

"We focused too much on the pictures", Spicer said, lamenting that he had not focused his statement at the time on the size of the total audience worldwide, including digital platforms.

Having quit in August, Mr Spicer won't have to defend Mr Trump's recent claims his nuclear button is bigger than that of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

He started ticking off examples: the inauguration, when he falsely claimed that President Trump had the largest inauguration crowd ever.

"While he may continue to say he's a supporter of the President and his agenda, what we didn't hear is a denial", Spicer said in a conversation on HLN's "SE Cupp Unfiltered".

"You realize that you're tarnishing your personal reputation, your family's reputation, your friends who like and support you, some of your colleagues and ultimately. this administration and the American people".

Spicer stepped down in seeming protest after Trump's NY financier buddy Anthony Scaramucci was hired as White House communications director.

Spicer has since been working on "The Briefing", a book he wrote about his time at the White House, and also became a visiting fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
