Schumer Meets With Trump On Funding Deal As Feds Prepare For Shutdown

Democratic US Senator Chuck Schumer is seen as holding the key to a deal to avert a government shutdown

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said early Saturday morning that President Donald Trump walked away from an offer earlier in the day that would include putting a wall on the border with Mexico "on the table" in a potential deal to avoid a government shutdown.

"Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement released just before midnight. "When Democrats start paying our armed forces and first responders we will reopen negotiations on immigration reform".

The White House in a statement blamed shutdown on Democrats calling them "obstructionist losers, not legislators" accusing them of blocking the bill to avert shutdown. He was blaming Democrats, saying they want to have a shutdown to cover up, he said, the good news of the economy. The shutdown lasted 16 days and furloughed hundreds of thousands of federal workers.

Unmentioned is that more than 60 Senators supported a bipartisan deal that would have provided permanent protection for DREAMers, enhanced border security and kept the government running.

With no apparent indications of a breakthrough in the Senate to avoid a government shutdown, the Capitol is illuminated in Washington, Friday evening, January 19, 2018. "Are they now so desperate they'll shut down the government instead?" However, multiple Democratic senators said they would vote "no" when the time came, blocking the measure.

The U.S. government shut down at midnight after Congress failed to resolve a partisan standoff over immigration and spending.

Schumer Meets With Trump On Funding Deal As Feds Prepare For Shutdown

In the past, Schumer has described Trump as "like a Sphinx on this issue", a sentiment Republicans also appeared to share.

There have been four government shutdowns since 1990. Trump also once tweeted that the government needed a shutdown to "fix mess".

As a last-ditch effort to keep the government open, the Senate scheduled a vote for 10 p.m. on the House-passed bill to extend funding for four weeks.

Trump blamed the Democrats in a pre-vote tweet, saying it was "not looking good for our great Military or Safety & Security on the very risky Southern Border", a reference to his much-vaunted proposal for a border wall with Mexico.

However, nearly all Senate Democrats are prepared to vote against the bill because it doesn't provide address the "Dreamers", the term for immigrants brought to the country illegally as children who were shielded by President Barack Obama's 2012 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) executive order.

Eighteen percent of respondents say both parties are to blame. This legislation would likely be dead on arrival in the Senate, where Democrats have said they have enough votes to block the legislation. They say that this is all because the president is not trustworthy, and they don't know what kind of deal they could strike with other people here in the Capitol that the president will accept.
