Samsung announces DRVLINE autonomous auto platform

Samsung Electronics' DRVLINE' platform allows automotive manufacturers and mobility service companies to select and apply sensors such as LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), radar, and camera, which are core elements for self-driving technology, parts, and software to their cars and services according to their needs. It also teased that it has "already signed with a leading European automaker" as the first customer for the solution; the identity of that automaker will be revealed at Samsung's and Harman's CES booths.

"The cars of tomorrow won't just change how we get around, they'll transform our streets and society".

With the DRVLINE platform, auto makers can also swap hardware in and out of vehicles; with this ability, cars are more future-proofed as technology develops towards Level 5 automation.

Samsung is aspiring to become the leader in the autonomous driving market. The new cockpit will make use of 5G technology and also Samsung's IoT platform.

One of the products of DRVLINE platform that Samsung and Harman highlighted in their announcement is the forward-facing camera that the two developed together.

Aside from the DRVLINE platform, Samsung and Harman also showcased other technologies that are intended for the cars of the future.

And to bring everything together Samsung and Harman are spearheading a new 5G-capable telematics system for cars, capable of giving 1Gbps connectivity to all the instruments of your auto. TCU is a product of Samsung's collaboration with Harman, which prior to its late 2016 acquisition by Samsung was perhaps best known to consumers for JBL-branded speakers; Harman also had significant long-term involvement in auto navigation systems deployed in popular vehicles. The industry has made incredible advances in automation, yet in-car compute is still a long way from approximating the power of our brains.

Samsung and Harman also unveiled a new Digital Cockpit platform that offers an in-car screen that can display vital vehicle information and features. But the strategic move has clearly paid off for the Korean tech giant as it rode on HARMAN's expertise and took to the CES stage at the Las Vegas Convention Center to announce the launch of products targeting autonomous driving and infotainment systems.

The companies are also jointly developing a 5G telematics solution that comes with a control unit with modular design that will provide high-resolution streaming and cloud-based applications in vehicles. A year of successes for Samsung Samsung has had a year of historic firsts, including acquiring connected technologies company Harman for $8.0 billion.
