'S-tty Media Men' list sparks 'Spartacus'-like movement

In her piece for "The Cut", Donegan writes that she initially created the spreadsheet as "a first attempt at solving what has seemed like an intractable problem: how women can protect ourselves from sexual harassment and assault". "My name is Moira Donegan".

However, her hopes of keeping the list private and shielded from the public eye failed when Buzzfeed revealed the existence of the list in an article and the entire contents of the list was posted on Reddit. Read on to find out. Though she hasn't specified her age, she writes that she graduated in 2013. Her credits include How to Get Away With Murder, Taken, Supergirl and Arrow among others; the last two shows on that list are part of Greg Berlanti's WBTV empire, which saw Flash showrunner and Supergirl EP Andrew Kreisberg fired in late November after harassment claims against him became public.

Anatomy of a controversy: The New York Times's Jaclyn Peiser explains the conversation surrounding Roiphe's upcoming piece in Harper's.

Quickly, dozens of other writers posted "I wrote the s--tty men in media list"; "Thanks for covering for me y'all, but I wrote the list"; "I don't know what y'all are talking about".

"The document that I created was meant to be private", she says. Moira Donegan confirmed that she was the one who created the file in October past year.

Lexi Alexander, a Palestinian-American-German filmmaker and former martial arts champion, admitted to creating the list on Twitter. The latter two projects were executively produced by Andrew Kreisberg, who was sacked in November after allegations of sexual harassment from more than a dozen people who worked on his team.

After Donegan unveiled her identity Wednesday night, women rallied around her on social media, describing her efforts as courageous and validating. "An expression of woundedness and rage has been transformed into a demand for a better world".

"The outrage made it seem inevitable that my identity would be exposed even before the Roiphe piece ran", she says in the essay. "In the beginning, I only wanted to create a place for women to share their stories of harassment and assault without being needlessly discredited or judged".

The list and its anonymous creator came back into the spotlight this week, after it was confirmed that Harper's magazine was set to publish a cover story about the list, potentially revealing the creator's identity in the process - and thus, setting her up for what could very much be a year full of doxxing, the risky yet common practice of exposing a person's personal information online, as pointed out by several people on social media.

By Wednesday afternoon, Cliffe, who declined to comment for this article, had pledged to pay more than $19,000 to reporters who had pulled their stories from Harper's, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Donegan says women could "judge the quality of that information for themselves and to make their own choices accordingly".

But Donegan does not regret creating it.

In the article, Donegan said she never expected the document to gain the kind of attention it did.

"Many commentators expressed sympathy with the aims of the document - women warning women, trying to help one another" Donegan wrote in an essay on TheCut, "but thought that its technique was too radical. If not, how would you respond to this allegation?"

Because the spreadsheet was sourced anonymously, she says she added a disclaimer: "This document is only a collection of misconduct allegations and rumors". Donegan has stated that she's lost friends and her job, while several men of influence have lost their jobs after their names appeared on the sheet.

The writer remained anonymous and lived in "fear of being exposed". "I've learned that protecting women is a position that comes with few protections itself".

Still, Donegan supports the movement and its ambitions. News 4 has spent several months working on an investigation into Greitens allegedly trying to blackmail a woman he had sexual encounters with in his home.
