Russian Federation had Clinton dirt

US President Donald Trump denies that his campaign colluded with Russia

When Alexander Downer left the cold of London for the warmth, beaches, and golf courses of his home state South Australia, he couldn't have imagined the storm that was about to break.

A tip from former Australian opposition leader Alexander Downer appears to have helped persuade the FBI to investigate Russian meddling in the United States election, according to the The New York Times.

The information was reportedly passed to the USA government, and was used to instigate Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 United States election.

Mr Downer, who reportedly held his liquor better, won an admission from Mr Papadopoulos that he knew Russian Federation had "political dirt" on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

After emails hacked from the Democratic National Committee began being made public a few months later the Australians passed the information about the meeting to their USA counterparts. He called on Australia to act alongside its ally during the war.

The New Daily approached the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for comment.

"We've got a government that hasn't handled the relationship with the USA particularly well", Ms Plibersek told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

In a bombshell report on Saturday, the New York Times revealed that the wide-ranging federal investigation was prompted by revelations shared by a Trump campaign aide at an upscale London bar in May 2016.

He is the current champion of anti-Trump supporters and American liberals, but Alexander Downer's elevation to worldwide hero may prove more than amusing for many Australians.

According to the Times' account, Papadopoulos appears to have been doing a bit more than fetching coffee. The newspaper's sources were reportedly U.S. and global officials.

Downer, formerly Australia's longest serving foreign minister, in the conservative Howard government, has been held up as a "hero" on social media by critics of Trump.

When the news of his confession broke, it was initially overshadowed by news of Paul Manafort, the one-time chairman of Donald Trump's campaign, being charged with money laundering and conspiracy against the US. Just 24 days later, Flynn resigned for misleading US Vice President Mike Pence about his discussions with senior Russian diplomat Sergey Kislyak.

The bureau opened its Russian Federation probe in July 2016.

Some of Trump's advisers have sought to distance themselves from Papadopoulos and continue to insist his role in the campaign was insignificant.

His tenure at Australia House expires in March, when George Brandis, the former Australian attorney general, will take up residence.
