Rubio fires his chief of staff over conduct

Reed had been Rubio's chief of staff for the last year and previously served as Rubio's campaign manager for his Senate re-election in 2016.

Sen. Marco Rubio on Saturday night traveled to his home state of Florida from Washington to fire his chief of staff over "allegations of improper conduct", the Republican lawmaker said.

Rubio issued a statement shortly before midnight Saturday that said he had been made aware of the situation earlier in the day. The complaints were brought directly to Senator Rubio.

According to Rubio's statement, he was informed of the allegations on Friday, investigated them with his General Counsel, and decided there was "sufficient evidence to conclude" that Reed had "violated office policies regarding proper relations between a supervisor and their subordinates", including "actions which in my judgement amounted to threats to withhold employment benefits".

He also noted that per the staffers' request, the details of the allegations against Reed will not be released.

His office plans to officially notify the appropriate Congressional and Senate administrative offices Monday.

NBC News was not immediately able to reach Reed for comment. Further details on details of the alleged improper conduct are not available at this time, and Jessica Fernandez, the current deputy chief of staff, will fill Reed's position in the interim.

After plenty of late-week ruckus over Hillary Clinton insulating a 2008 campaign advisor who was accused of sexual harassment, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) is striking a starkly different tune. "He's a superb manager who loves Florida, has earned my trust, and relishes the challenge of solving tough problems", Rubio said when he named Reed to the post. In 2005, the Arkansas GOP, along with then-treasurer Charles Mazander, were fined a combined $360,000 by the Federal Elections Commission (FEC). "They've worked hard to keep it quiet".
