Rory McIlroy plays down heart irregularity

Rory McIlroy 'I have this thickening of my left ventricle'

McIlroy, 28, disclosed the problem during an interview with The (London) Telegraph in Dubai, where he has been preparing for his return to competition after a almost fourth-month break.

Rory McIlroy says the rib that bothered him throughout 2017 is completely fine, but a recent MRI revealed an issue with his heart. "But I've got a bit of an irregularity with my heart that I have to keep on top of", he told The Telegraph in a recent interview.

McIlroy, 28, who was winless during an injury-plagued season last year, said he will have to undergo an echo cardiogram every six months and then an MRI scan every year.

He didn't sound overly concerned about the condition, describing it as an "irregularity" that he needs to "stay on top of". "Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", he said.

Rory McIlroy has an irregular heartbeat, which showed up in tests he's been undertaking over the past three months, but is feeling "fit and healthy" ahead of his return to competitive action next week.

"I feel there's been a big reaction to it in the media which there really shouldn't be".

McIlroy fell from No. 2 in the Official World Golf Rankings at the beginning of 2017 to No. 11 at the start of 2018 after not winning past year.

That was after winning the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup in 2016 and starting the year with a playoff loss in South Africa.

McIlroy is part of a strong field for the European Tour's Abu Dhabi Championship, where he will begin his preparations for the Masters, the only major he needs to win to complete a career grand slam. "Mentally more than physically probably".

After the interview, McIlroy took to Instagram to further assure his fans that all is well.

The four-time major victor cut short his 2017 schedule in order to undergo treatment on a rib injury, which he says has now healed, and news of his latest health setback had led to concerns over his plans for this year.
