Resurgent Kerber Reinforces Australian Open Favorite Status After Winning WTA Sydney

Sam Stosur happy to fly under the radar

Angelique Kerber made the ideal start to 2018, winning the Sydney International after beating Ashleigh Barty in the final on Saturday.

However, she impressed in Sydney, beating the likes of Lucie Safarova, Venus Williams, Dominika Cibulkova and Camila Giorgi before edging out home favourite Barty 6-4 6-4 in the final.

"I have had a great week and the final was not easy against Ash but I was able to play my game in important moments". Actually, I'm looking forward for the final.

"We have set up a ideal platform for me to work with this year to try and go deep in tournaments, whether it's in Australia or in Europe or in the States".

"I certainly shot myself in the foot with my serve today", she said.

"I'm sure he wouldn't make the comeback in the third set without the crowd. I'm very happy with my performance".

"This tournament is fantastic for me, because in seven matches I can say that maybe that was my best tournament mentally", said Medvedev. In the end I was getting the wins. Against Thanasi, I'm sure the crowd will be insane in Melbourne.

Sharapova was given a wildcard in Stuttgart in March past year, even though her suspension didn't allow her to play her first-round match until the third day of the tournament - a decision Kerber labelled at the time as "a little bit strange".

Barty's serve was much improved too, hitting just one double fault from the nine she dished up in the Gavrilova match. The German would ultimately take their match in three sets, cruising through the final two sets against the American. The World No. 167, who is projected to soar to No. 127 in the ATP Rankings on Monday, was the lowest-ranked Sydney finalist since Andrei Cherkasov (No. 223) in 1989. "I have enjoyed every second of it". I've only three or two days, so it's just chipping away and keep working on my weapons.

The Sydney International Wheelchair Tennis Open took place at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on Saturday.

Elise Mertens successfully defended her Hobart International title with a 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory over Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Italian fourth seed Fabio Fognini set up a semi-final against qualifier Daniil Medvedev following a 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-4), 6-2 marathon against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

Awaiting the German in the final will be Ashleigh Barty, who overcame a slow start to win her all-Australian semi-final against Daria Gavrilova 3-6 6-4 6-2.
