Radon Action Month good time to test your home

State offers free radon test kits

Residents are asked to follow the instructions when conducting the radon test and to submit results to the Connecticut Department of Public Health Laboratory. If the route of exit from the ground is blocked by a home foundation and concrete slab, the gas enters that structure through cracks and gaps in the building components.

The health department, 3415 28th St., Port Huron, has a limited number of free radon test kits that it's handing out as part of National Radon Detection Month.

Short-term radon detection kits are available for $10 at Teton County Environmental Health in the public health building at 460 E. Pearl Ave. The Lincoln County Health Department recommends testing for radon if you have never tested your home before or during real estate transactions.

The area of the home that has the highest health risk is the lowest livable level (the one closest to the point of entry for Radon).

And if your test may have come back negative a few years ago, she recommends to continue to test your home in the future to avoid any harm. When people breathe in radon, it damages the lungs.

Over 20,000 Americans suffer from radon-related cancer each year, and it causes up to 15 percent of lung cancers worldwide. Knowing that there is a high probability of a unsafe agent lurking in your house, of all the initiatives you plan to undertake to promote improved health in your household, don't you think identifying Radon contamination in your home should be first on that list? The data is from radon test results that have been monitored by the state.

Homes with radon levels of four (4) picocuries per Liter (4 pCi/L) or higher should be fixed.

According to Clint Marshall, public health radon specialist, it is estimated that 1 in 5 homes in Dane County have high levels of radon. "Testing for radon is simple and low-priced", Marshall said.

Radon testing isn't expensive and can be done either by a professional or by purchasing your own kit.

If testing shows that there is a radon problem, the homeowner will need to install a system that will prevent the radon from accumulating in the home.
