North Royalton hacker stole potentially embarrassing information from computers, feds say

In 2003, when Durachinsky was 15 years old, he created a string of malware that would later be called "Fruitfly" and infected tens of thousands of IP addresses worldwide, according to the USA attorney's office.

The fruitfly malware was used to infect Mac and Windows operating systems.

A OH man was charged Wednesday as part of chilling, 13-year cybertheft campaign in which he allegedly stole personal data from thousands of people and remotely controlled their devices, allowing him to monitor unsuspecting victims and listen to their communications. "This case is an example of the Justice Department's continued efforts to hold accountable cybercriminals who invade the privacy of others and exploit technology for their own ends".

A hacker in OH who secretly stole personal information from thousands of people for over a decade and controlled their devices from afar was charged Wednesday with fraud, identity theft and violations of the federal Wiretap Act.

Officials said some of the computers infected by Fruitfly went beyond personal computers.

Authorities say cyber experts have had him on their radar as he previously hacked into schools, companies, and local police departments. The malware would notify Durachinksy if his victims typed words associated with pornography on their computers and the hacker is alleged to have collected child pornography through the virus.

The current indictment does not list specific victims, but Durachinsky was arrested a year ago after a series of hacks at Case Western Reserve University were reported. Reportedly, he not only stole sensitive data to use for fraud and blackmail (such as logins, embarrassing chats and medical records) but took screenshots, logged keystrokes and spied on people through their webcams. Using the stolen login credentials, Durachinsky was able to access and download additional information from third-party websites.

The FBI said that it had seized a laptop belonging to Durachinsky that included the client control software. The investigation determined that Durachinsky had infected computers at other universities and institutions from 2003 to 2017.
