Nintendo Switch games 2018

For the past six years, the Games Developer Conference (GDC) conducts a survey to understand the state of the video game development industry.

Across all games, loot box or not, just under half of the developers surveyed said they were releasing a traditional, paid game, with 39% saying their next title would be "free to download".

In any case, GDC's State of the Industry survey seems to paint a pretty picture for the Switch, and it'll be interesting to see what developers think of it next year. As for the platform that most interested developers, a much larger portion of survey respondents said Switch: 36 percent.

The GDC State of the Industry 2018 results come from responses of almost 4000 different game developers, asking them what platform are they now working on a project for, what will they choose in the future and so on. Those numbers are up from 3% and 5%, respectively, in last year's survey, which isn't very surprising considering the Switch was still a newly revealed console we didn't know much about at that point. That puts the console above the Xbox One (28 percent), but still below the PS4 (39 percent) and PC platforms (59 percent).

Since its successful launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has already gained significant mindshare among developers, with 12% now developing titles on the platform, compared to 3% previous year.

Game Developers Conference 2018 will take place from March 19th to March 23rd at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California. Only 16% mentioned that their games have sold less on Switch than other consoles, while 33% remarked that the question did not apply to them. 23% are working on a game with DLC, and 22% are working on something which will sell in-game items for real money. Interest in developing for Switch shot past interest in VR headsets, mobile platforms and Xbox One.

When asked to elaborate on their opinions on the matter, several developers expressed cautious sentiment about its proper implementation, highlighting the need to only use loot boxes to award vanity items. Still, 71% believe VR and AR are long-term sustainable businesses, and even if that's a slight drop from last year's 75%, it's still a solid amount of stated support for the platforms.
