More snow likely today - Met Eireann

Snow and ice has been forecast for certain areas of Northern Ireland

The Met Office has issued amber "be prepared" warnings of snow and ice for southern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The forecaster has put in place the severe "be aware" warnings between 6pm on Monday and 11am on Wednesday.

The weather alert warns of "heavy, squally showers" that will turn to "sleet, hail, and snow" over the north of the United Kingdom, with over 10 cm of heavy snow expected to fall over higher ground in Scotland.

The public is being urged to take extra care on roads and pavements.

Tomorrow is forecast to be even more severe with hail, sleet, snow and thunder all on the cards.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "There have been plenty of heavy snow showers, particularly across Scotland".

"There is still significant uncertainty regarding the extent and location of any heavy snowfall, at this stage parts of northern and central Scotland appear most at risk".

An amber warning for snow has been issued for Ayrshire, Lanarkshire and southern Scotland, with delays likely on roads.

A further Met Office warning is already in place for strong gusting wind Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.

He continued: "The final track of the storm will be crucial to which areas become worst affected by the snow, but at this stage it looks like the worst weather will hit the same areas as last night".

According to other reports, road, railway and ferry services are to be massively affected.

No snow is expected on the ground but there may be a slight dusting on the highest hills.

At low levels, snow fall of between 2-8cm (1-3in) will be more typical, though some parts will see very little at all. 3-8cm of fresh snow is likely to accumulate widely with up to 20cm over high ground. There is also a possibility that some bridges may close.

The UK's national weather service warned "snow showers" will affect Northern Ireland during Thursday and Friday, "although often falling as sleet and hail near windward coasts".

"Here, in particular, there is potential for disruption to power supplies from lightning strikes. Along with the strong winds a spell of heavy rain can also be expected, which could also be combined with a temporary thaw of lying snow in the north, leading to some surface water flooding in places".
