Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters to have season-ending surgery

Waiters sprained the ankle on December 23, causing him to miss the past eight games. Per Charania, he received multiple opinions on the ankle by doctors in Los Angeles before making the decision for surgery. Waiters was limited to 46 games last season after playing 70-plus games in each of the previous three campaigns.

Over the course of his six-year National Basketball Association tenure, Waiters has appeared in at least 70 games only twice.

But he had not been as efficient as he or the Heat would like for the most part, shooting 39.8 percent from the field, down from 42.4 percent last season.

Waiters' production has dipped this season as he has played through pain in the ankle that he said was "excruciating" at times. "I didn't even do anything when I twisted it".

His season will end having appeared in 30 games and averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game. "I just twisted it".

Waiters has tried to recover without surgery to no avail. Tyler Johnson has been starting in his place with Wayne Ellington seeing extended minutes off the bench.
