The children's book is about a five-year old girl who is now unnamed, who hails from Kenya - which is also where the "12 Years a Slave" actress is from.
"Sulwe is a dark skinned girl who goes on a starry-eyed adventure, and awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty", Nyong'o revealed on Instagram.
"She encounters lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning", Lupita said. Her appearance gets her down and she wants to find a way to lighten her skin, but that changes when she embarks on "a whimsical adventure in the night sky".
More news: Australian Open: A lookahead to Saturday, recap of FridayAs reported by the New York Times, the word "Sulwe" directly translates to star in Nyong'o's native language.
Nyong'o isn't the first celebrity to write a children's book based on her own experience with race and beauty. The book makes it Nyong'o's debut publication. When thinking about her own journey into acceptance and self-love, Ms. Nyong'o cited reading with her mother as critical to her development. After gaining notoriety as a performer, Nyong'o has been vocal about body positivity and pushing back on derogatory statements and actions regarding her blackness. The report states that Nyong'o hopes her book will make all children rethink "what it means to be lovely". The Star Wars actress, who will release Sulwe with Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, struggled with the same issues as Sulwe growing up, as she was aware of her darker complexion compared to her "brown and pretty" lighter-skinned sister.
"I put on the TV and only saw pale skin", she said. "That you will feel validation of your external beauty, but also, get to the deeper business of being lovely inside", she said. Later on, she realised that "beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume; it was something that I just had to be", she said during the speech. You see, I don't like to fight the reality.
