Kris Bryant gets record first-year arbitration deal

Cubs agree to terms with Kyle Hendricks, Justin Wilson

The Cubs and Bryant avoided arbitration, and the 26-year-old third baseman receives a hefty raise after making $1.05 million last year.

Toronto's Josh Donaldson, Baltimore's Manny Machado, Washington's Anthony Rendon and the Chicago Cubs' Kris Bryant were among the more than 170 players headed to the exchange.

The Chicago Cubs and third baseman Kris Bryant avoided arbitration by settling on a $10.85 million deal, a first-year arbitration record, a source close to the situation has informed FanRag Sports. Arbitration hearings are set up for next month, though the two sides could reach an agreement before then. The 27-year-old is eligible for free agency after the 2019 season. He more than did his part in leading the Cubs to 103 wins while capturing an NL Central Division title and a World Series ring.

Bryant hit.295 with 29 home runs and 73 RBIs in 2017.

Baseball's current collective bargaining agreement provides language that allows clubs a wide lens to analyze a player's contributions, "including but not limited to his overall performance, special qualities of leadership and public appeal". The Cubs have never gone to arbitration with a player in the Theo Epstein-Jed Hoyer era.

The Chicago Cubs agreed to terms Friday with pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Justin Wilson.

As Russell was called up just a few weeks into the 2015 season, he qualifies as a "Super Two" player, meaning he is arbitration eligible from 2018-21, after which he can enter the free agent market. Reliever Justin Grimm did not reach an agreement with the team.
