Katie Couric Just Broke Her Silence on Matt Lauer's Sexual Misconduct Allegations

"The accounts I've read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it's completely unacceptable that any woman at the Today show experienced this kind of treatment".

"I had no idea this was going on during my tenure or after I left", she added.

Almost two months after Matt Lauer was ousted from NBC over allegations of sexual misconduct, his former co-host Katie Couric finally has something to say. "I think not everything has to be for public consumption these days", she told ET - also praised current Today co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb for how they've handled Lauer's scandal on-air.

Though Couric made a lighthearted comment in 2012 on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen claiming that Lauer "pinches me on the a** a lot", she clarified to People magazine that she wasn't serious.

ET's Leanne Aguilera sat down with the journalist at Nat Geo's Television Critics Association press day on Satuday, where she revealed why she took so long to speak out on Lauer, with whom she co-hosted the Today show from 1997 to 2006.

More news: A 146-inch television will soon be available for purchase

She departed NBC in 2006 to anchor the "CBS Evening News" and has been criticized for her silence in the more than a month since Lauer was sacked. And she now tells People that she was unaware of Lauer's alleged behavior.

News conducted an investigation of a Lauer colleague's detailed complaint of "inappropriate sexual behavior".

Still, the entire situation is "very upsetting" to Couric, and although she's still unsure how to fully process Lauer's actions, she's optimistic about the future of Today.

The disgraced 60-year-old previously released a statement following the initial allegations against him, which were later backed by additional accounts of both sexual assault and harassment. "Thanks for your interest". "To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry", he wrote.

'The whole thing has been very painful for me. Because I am writing this, I still know the thickness of the disappointment and damage I have gone behind at home and in NBC.
