Jolie urges UN Security Council to solve Syria war

Jolie told the refugees she was very proud of them and that'you're very strong all of you

Zaatari is the largest refugee camp for Syrians in Jordan, it hosts around 80,000 Syrian refugees.

The Hollywood superstar visited the Za'atari camp in Jordan to speak to refugees from Syria's long and bloody civil war.

The UN Refugee agency's special envoy, actress Angelina Jolie poses with a Syrian child during her visit to the Zaatari Syrian Refugee Camp, in Mafraq, Jordan, January 28, 2018.

After talking with a Syrian refugee family who had been living in Zaatari refugee camp for the past five years, Jolie visited "Tiger Girls" program funded by UNHCR, which aims to empower young refugee girls through a range of academic and social skills courses. "I'm very proud. You're very strong, all of you".

She also met with camp and United Nations officials who briefed her on the challenges faced by the aid agencies.

"After seven years of war, most Syrian refugees have exhausted any savings they have, the vast majority of them already live below the poverty line, on less than $3 a day, if you imagine what that would mean for your family", the actress said.

He highlighted the importance for the global community to continue assisting Jordan in bearing the repercussions of Syrian refugee influx, and offering education, health services and decent living conditions to 1.3 million Syrians in the Kingdom. They have been warning for years that they would reach a point where they on their own could do more.

There are also three other camps in Jordan, namely the Emirati camp known as Mrajeeb al-Fhood, Azraq refugee camp and the al-Hadiqa camp in al-Ramtha.

"It's painful to come here and see the same suffering", said Jolie.

"So my message to world leaders, as they prepare to gather at the UN General Assembly in 10 days' time, is to ask that the fundamental root causes of the Syria conflict, and what it will take to end it, are put at the center of the discussion".
