Jennifer Hudson To Play Aretha Franklin In New Biopic

REUTERS/Mario AnzuoniAretha Franklin personally picked Jennifer Hudson to play her in the film about her life.

Saturday at his annual pre-Grammy party, longtime record industry executive and producer Clive Davis dropped some exclusive information about the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic.

Jennifer Hudson blew us away with her turn as Effie White in Dreamgirls, and apparently, we weren't the only ones: The Grammy and Oscar victor has just been announced as the lead in an upcoming musical biopic, and she was hand-chosen for the part by the RL star behind the film. "Hudson concluded the performance by delivering a medley of Franklin's hits including "Think", "Rock Steady", and "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman".

As Deadline also learned, the biopic will be shot by MGM, with Straight Outta Compton producer Scott Bernstein and music producer Harvey Mason Jr. The two linked to create the music for "Dreamgirls", which is coincidentally the film Hudson won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for.

Hollywood actress and singer Jennifer Hudson is known to have starred in many movies and television shows such as The Voice, American Idol, Sex and the City and The Secret Life of Bees.

This wouldn't be Jennifer Hudson's first foray into acting obviously.

The announcement was made by music impresario Clive Davis, the Post says. For example, last June, Aretha Franklin was honored in Detroit with a street named in her honor.

Mason has a history of working with Aretha Franklin.

Franklin now has four concerts set for this year, in Boston, Toronto and Newark, N.J., as well as an April 28 appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
