India orders fresh inquiry into historic Sikh masscare

It said a supervisory body it had appointed found that out of 241 cases, 186 cases were closed without investigation. Angered by this, a conspiracy was hatched and Indira Gandhi was shot dead at her New Delhi residence on 31st October, 1984 by a couple of Sikh security guards. "On perusal of the same, we find that the SIT has not done further investigation in respect of 186 cases".

The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed former judge of Delhi High Court Justice SN Dhingra to head the new Special Investigation Team (SIT) that will probe 186 anti-Sikh riots cases which were closed by an earlier SIT.

A three-judge bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud passed the order appointing judge Dhingra and the police officers after a consensus. The violence claimed 2,733 lives in the national capital alone.

The Haryana government had Justice SN Dhingra inquiry commission to inquire into questionable land deals by Robert Vadra.

When the Centre constituted the SIT in 2014, a total of 293 cases were entrusted to it.

Earlier in March, on the heels of a petition filed by S Gurlad Singh Kahlon, the top court had asked the MHA constituted SIT to submit all the files pertaining to the reinvestigation of the 199 cases pertaining to communal riots.

"The special investigation team formed by their own government closed 1984 riots cases because their own members were involved", AAP leader Sanjay Singh told the media here.

Petitioner S Gurlad Singh Kahlon had earlier told the Bench that a total of 293 Sikh killing related cases were taken up for scrutiny by the earlier SIT, which had made a decision to close 199 of them after scrutiny, notes The Tribune (TT).
