While those at the rally had connections to charter schools, their support is for all school choice options, including private schools, magnet schools, online learning and home schools. Students enrolled at a failing school can transfer to a better school. However, at least half of the scholarships must be given to students who are completely below the free and reduced lunch level.

Charter schools were created in North Carolina two decades ago and now enroll students in more than 170 schools. They want education options for their children and the freedom to choose. For students, it means better jobs and higher wages.

The strong public support and momentum for school choice over the last several years certainly explains why the teachers unions and other defenders of the education status quo have worked so hard to ramp up the attacks. The multimillion-dollar media campaign known as Nebraska Loves Public Schools encourages such complacency.

We also went into what you should consider when choosing a school. This is despite the fact that only 5 percent of the 54 million K-12 students are now in private school choice programs or charter schools.

As we celebrate nationwide, we should work to expand school choice opportunities here in Nebraska. The problem there is that private schools charge tuition, which many parents can not afford.

He also said that many adults have become very good at providing 20th-century education programs that are inadequate for the 21st century, and that many of today's students are "bored out of their minds" and are eager and capable of new ways of learning.

Dr. Michael Berg the founder of SAIL says he's happy to offer families a different option that includes education and the arts. Arkansas is in the second year of such a program that is limited to students who require special-education services.

In a community the size of Hopkins County, there may not be the demand for charter schools, but there are private schools that give parents an option. These policies have widespread public support.

Texans have planed 3,957 School Choice Week events and activities across the state, aiming to raise awareness about the educational opportunities parents have, or want to have, for their kids. Families and children who are trapped in low-performing schools or schools that just don't work for them should not have their fate determined by the luck of the draw.
