HBO's FAHRENHEIT 451 Adaptation Looks Very Cool

'Fahrenheit 451'

Beth Cherne felt like she struck gold when she was searching for a play to direct for her second production with the Alternative Truth Project and found an adaptation of "Fahrenheit 451", Ray Bradbury's cautionary tale about a dystopian society in which books are outlawed and society is made up of illiterate, brainwashed hedonists who wallow in state-approved entertainment, drugged into complacency.

"Jordan ("Black Panther", "Creed", "Fruitvale Station") and Michael Shannon ("The Shape of Water", HBO's "Boardwalk Empire"; Oscar® nominee for "Nocturnal Anmals" and Revolutionary Road") star in HBO Films' FAHRENHEIT 451. It is being directed by Ramin Bahrani who recently told the Hollywood Reporter that although the film's plot strays from the source material, it remains true to the original theme.

Speaking of, here's Michael B. Jordan as Montag again. Real books were burned in order to find the correctly scary tone for the sci-fi dystopia, which was tough for the cast and crew of heavy readers. If Trump had it his way, I'm sure he'd be quite alright burning every damn book there is-that is, with the exception of The Art of the Deal. Jordan, and Michael Shannon. This week, the premium television network shared a teaser trailer for the upcoming flick. And judging by the style of this teaser, burning books, and subsequently deciding not to burn books because censorship sucks, is going to look pretty badass. Flames shoot from the faceless man's weapon, setting the pile of books alight. In a literal sense, the book is even more absurdly on-the-nose, given our commander-in-chief's notorious disdain for the written word and unhealthy obsession with his Fox and Friends echo chamber.

The movie script for "Fahrenheit 451" has something like stage directions, but it's more like narration, Cherne said. But when Bradbury wrote his book it was set in the distant future; HBO's adaptation is set in "alternate tomorrow, right here right now", Bahrani warned. It will be interesting to see how the new movie updates Bradbury's story to tackle the modern media landscape. The glimmer of hope in the dystopian gloom is Guy Montag's dawning sense of curiosity, which causes him to push back against society's brainwashing.
