Hawaii parents get school letters after false missile alert

The false Hawaii missile alert was sent out in a climate where North Korea's Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump have been pushing each others buttons inflaming tensions between the two nations

A Hawaii Emergency Management Agency employee mistakenly broadcast a ballistic missile threat alert that was sent to cellphones across the state at 8:07 a.m. Saturday.

To prevent a repeat of the incident, Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency has said it will require two employees to activate the alert system - one to issue the warning and another to confirm it.

The Senate Commerce Committee is expected to announce later Thursday it will hold a hearing next week on the false alert and why it went uncorrected for 38 minutes, officials said.

Hawaii is the only state that is set up to send cellphone alerts about the threat of an incoming ballistic missile. They posted social media messages about 13 minutes after the erroneous warning.

She said the system includes outdoor warning sirens, typically used for tornadoes but they could be used in a variety of emergencies.

HI-EMA has already instituted a two-person activation/verification rule for tests as well as actual missile launch notifications.

In November, the FCC approved the use of new technology known as ATSC 3.0 that uses precision broadcasting and targets emergency or weather alerts on a street-by-street basis. An internal test involving the Emergency Alert System and the Wireless Emergency Alert was initiated during a shift change. It has added a "cancellation button", allowing users to send a second alert over the same system that notifies recipients that the first was a false alarm.

The agency also said that it would conduct no more missile alert tests until it could fix the system, including creating a protocol to reverse an alert if it is issued in error.

"They took responsibility", Trump said.

One of the most risky aspects of nuclear arms is the nuclear tensions that come with them that can lead to catastrophic miscommunication setting them off.

Gov. Ige spoke with us about the effects on tourism, what would actually happen across all levels of communication had the alert been real, if he has spoken with President Trump about the situation and how an attack on Honolulu would effect neighbor islands, such as Maui.
