Harman leads in Hawaii as Spieth steadies the ship

"I was really disappointed with the way I finished the year and the Playoffs because I wanted very badly to make that team and I didn't get it done". I'm not making everything I'm looking at, but I'm hitting a lot of good putts and made a few.

Joining Johnson in a tie for second at 10-under 130 are Chris Kirk (67) - who began the day with an eagle at the par-4 10th and ended it with a bogey at the par-5 ninth - Tom Hoge (65) and journeyman John Peterson (64).

Kirk gave chase in the afternoon, opening his round with an eagle at the 10th hole and closing within one stroke before settling for a three-under 67 that concluded with a bogey at the par-five ninth.

Kirk grabbed an eagle at the 10th on his way to a three-under 67, while two-time major victor Johnson matched that round and like Harman, sank an eagle on the ninth.

He surged ahead in the morning with two quick birdies on the back nine, made the turn in 32 and ran off three straight birdies early on the front nine.

The quartet of Vaughn Taylor, Kyle Stanley, Talor Gooch and Brian Harman are one shot adrift of the leaders after all shot 64s. Harman, meanwhile, continues his stellar play of late after a third-place finish at last week's Tournament of Champions.

He's also aiming to put himself in line for berth on the United States team for the Ryder Cup in France, after missing out on a Presidents Cup spot previous year. "That one definitely stung", he said. "I'm just going to show up tomorrow and try to hit the first tee shot best you can and go from there".
