Halifax doesn't make the cut for Amazon's new $5-billion headquarters

The Assembly Square neighborhood of Somerville

"We would have loved to have made it into the next round for Amazon's second headquarters but everyone here is incredibly proud of the proposal we submitted".

The company said previous year it would spend more than $5 billion to build another headquarters in North America to house as many as 50,000 employees.

The extra space will help the rapidly growing company, which had almost 542,000 employees at the end of September, a 77 percent jump from the year before.

"What I really worry about is that our national immigration policy is becoming so restrictive that it makes Canada look like a better place to be because they don't have those rules", Wylde said.

Amazon also signaled an interest in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, which could put the massive office in President Trump's backyard.

The logo of United States online retail giant Amazon is displayed on the Brieselang logistics center, west of Berlin on November 11, 2014. At the outset there were 238 cities from 43 states and 6 provinces in the running.

Boston, considered a favorite to land Amazon, is among the 20.

Amazon released a list of 20 finalists on Thursday, and Toronto is the only Canadian city in contention. It may have lost to competing cities by not offering financial incentives.

The race for Amazon is over, at least for the Twin Cities.

Amazon has more than 540,000 employees worldwide.

Even if Newark bested the Big Apple for the campus, he added, its proximity to NY would still mean a lot of economic activity for the city.

Among the 19 American finalists are New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Those requirements include 500,000 square feet of commercial space by 2019; the ability to fit up to 8 million square feet of commercial space for 50,000 jobs within a 15-mintue radius; proximity to transit, highways and airports; and connectivity to nearby mixed-use neighborhoods. "We have great working relationships with all the people who submitted bids, and we have great working relationships at the local level with the people who are left, and I'm looking forward to just hearing how Amazon wants to pursue this from here, but fundamentally, this is a great statement about the quality of life, the quality of the workforce and the quality of the people and the institutions that make up MA". "I don't think tax incentives at any incentive package is going to be the deciding factor".

A number of other cities in MA bid for the so-called HQ2, along with New Hampshire, which memorably knocked "congested" Boston in its proposal.

Grand Rapids submitted a 108-page document to Amazon to make its case but also did not make the cut.
