Gerrit Cole Traded to Astros for Colin Moran, Joe Musgrove, More

To the victors go the spoils, with the defending World Series champion Houston Astros reportedly agreeing to a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow. Sports-was the first to report the news, with The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal later reporting that the Astros sent right-handed pitcher Michael Feliz to Pittsburgh alongside Moran and reliever Joe Musgrove.

Cole, 27, is coming off a down season in which he posted a career-worst 4.26 ERA, but he is under team control for two more seasons.

Moran, 25, is a natural third baseman who also can play first base and shortstop.

Moran, 25, hit.364 (4x11) with a homer and three RBI in seven games for the Astros in 2017.

More news: A 146-inch television will soon be available for purchase

Musgrove pitched in 38 games (15 starts) last season for the Astros and went 7-8 with a 4.77 ERA. He had a breakout 2017 campaign in the minors, slashing.308/.373/.542 with 18 home runs in 73 games at Triple-A Fresno.

Martin, 22, was an eighth-round pick in 2013. He has one year of arbitration remaining and could command a hefty salary bump in 2019, one of the reasons the Pirates had explored trading him in recent weeks.

The Astros are adding Cole to a rotation that ranked sixth in the majors last season in ERA, WHIP, strikeout percentage and opponent batting average, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Reports were that the Yankees would have been willing to include ex-top prospect Clint Frazier, a 23-year-old left fielder blocked Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, in a deal for Cole.
