Fodder scam: Lalu's sentencing deferred to Thursday

Rabri Devi

Special judge Shivpal Singh adjourned sentencing for a day as lawyers abstained from work to condole the death of a member of their fraternity.

The CBI court also summoned them to appear before it on January 23.

The court found senior RJD leaders Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Manoj Jha and former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav guilty of contempt of court. With the court deferring the pronouncement of quantum of sentence against Lalu and the other accused to Thursday, Lalu was sent back to the Birsa Munda jail.

Hearing in the multi-million fodder scam case was completed on December 13 in a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court of Ranchi. However, the lawyers would not attend the court after paying condolences to the dead, the RJD chief's lawyer told reporters.

However, the Jharkhand High Court in 2014 gave relief to the former Bihar Chief Minister and others by dropping charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and prevention of corruption. He added that "the court has chose to hear the case in alphabetical order".

He was convicted by the special court on Dec 23. Playing the caste card is an old ploy by the Lalu family whenever things don't go its way but it is not going to work any longer. Lalu Prasad who is known for his wittiness now has created a series of hilarious jokes regarding today's sentence on Fodder scam. "But for us, Lalu Prasad will always be our God on earth", said a group of RJD workers gathered outside the jail gate on Wednesday morning. "Every party leader and worker will become Lalu Prasad in his absence", said State party chief Ram Chandra Purve.

The RJD has convened a meeting of its senior party leaders on January 6.
