Facebook Will Remove Clutter From Messenger This Year

Messenger pledges to cut clutter this year.

As of right now, Facebook has yet to divulge which parts of Messenger it considers "clutter", and Marcus didn't say how the Messenger team planned to streamline and simplify the app. While we raced to build these new features, the app became too cluttered.

It's a good plan, considering Messenger has become weighed down with unnecessary add-ons.

The mobile community has a love/hate relationship with Facebook Messenger. "A lot of them have found their product market fit; some haven't", he writes.

Facebook Messenger has an interesting history. According to a Facebook-commissioned study by Nielsen, 56% of people surveyed would rather message a business than call customer service, and 67% expect to message businesses even more over the next two years.

Presenting them with a visual gallery of your day isn't suited to this goal. This follows up a recent announcement that Facebook is changing how your News Feed will look.

While simplification is first and foremost, Facebook has several other goals for Messenger.

Facebook Messenger has added chatbots, advertisements, games. You can share your on a map, songs, or Food Network recipes. It's an embarrassment of riches that feels hard to spend. It makes sense to remove some of the features that seem to work better for platforms like Instagram and Snapchat while keeping Messenger more basic for users to communicate, as was the case when it initially started off. Now livestreaming on the other hand... This could be something like what Facebook's native app offers with Facebook Live.

Facebook wants to make Messenger "the best way to spend time together when you're apart". "Expect to see us invest in massively simplifying and streamlining Messenger this year", the chief said. But now that I've had more time to reflect, I don't think it's such a bad idea.

Facebook Messenger has 1.3 billion users, and the company has now revealed its plans to improve its service to these users. That's a lot of people who use it.

In late 2016, the social media giant launched Messenger Lite, an Android-only app originally intended for emerging markets using smartphones with limited memory and processing power and with slow internet connections.
