Facebook Will Now Ask Users for Input on Trustworthiness of News Sources

Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks on stage during the annual Facebook F8 developers conference in San Jose California U.S

On Friday, the California tech giant announced in a blog post that it would alter the algorithm for picking news to show in its News Feed based on whether the news is considered "trustworthy", whether it is "informative", and whether it is "relevant to people's local community".

After announcing last week that it will prioritize posts from friends and family members over brands and publishers, the social media site will also begin focusing on news from "trusted sources".

"There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today", Zuckerberg said.

Facebook is going to start prioritising news from outlets that its users think are "trustworthy".

Also past year, U.S. Republican lawmakers expressed concern that Facebook was suppressing stories from conservative news sources.

What's more, this announcement to tweak the News Feed to put people first could be nothing more than a stunt. "This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed", he wrote.

Facebook is rolling out a major change to its News Feed: pushing up news articles that come from "high quality" sources, and pushing down the others.

Zuckerberg continued with, "we decided that having the community determine which sources are broadly trusted would be most objective". Rather, they'll let the users decide what counts as a trusted source. "And we're starting next week with trusted sources". "We will be watching that very closely as the changes are rolled out".

Facebook won't be assessing the trustworthiness of news outlets itself.

HOLY FUCK, MARK. If people can not tell truth from bullshit, why are those same people being used to rank publications on a scale of trustworthiness?

The social network has long struggled with fake or misleading news on its platform. Now, months into the test, a New York Times report suggests the split design not only brought less views for news, but inadvertently promoted fake news. Because as Facebook is now making increasingly clear, we're all, ultimately, responsible for vetting our own media consumption, even on social media.
