Facebook testing local news section on its platform

If you're using Facebook to find your news, you're going to be seeing less of us

Now, there seems to be an unlikely saviour - Facebook wants to step in and save local news, as it begins testing "Today In", a feature that pushes local news and information to Facebook users.

CNET reported today that the test is now live for a new section called "Today In" across six United States cities.

The social networking behemoth is reportedly using artificial intelligence to cull content for the new section.

"Today In", which provides local news, group discussions, local events and community updates to users, is an initiative born out of the Facebook Journalism Project.

On the flipside, the report notes that while users may appreciate the local aspect of "Today In", Facebook could have trouble attracting advertisers to feeds that are smaller and less diverse in nature.

Facebook Inc shares rose $0.62 (+0.33%) in premarket trading Thursday.

The company says this is all part of Facebook's Journalism Project initiative, which Facebook launched shortly after last year's USA presidential election in which so-called fake news spread on the service, leading many to point to Facebook as part of the reason for Donald Trump's surprising victory.

Commentators point out that the social network's reported foray into local news publishing segment comes at a time when it is looking to fix the problem of misinformation and fake news on its platform.

The social media giant, Facebook keeps on launching new features for compete the tough market of social media apps. Whether local content becomes as potentially contentious as national news remains to be seen as the US enters mid-term election season this year.

For those who have access to the feature, it is accessible via the menu button in the bottom-right of the main Facebook app. These will include posts coming both from people as well as pages.
