Epic to shut down Paragon, offers full refunds

Paragone

Epic's MOBA will be shutting down on the 26th of April.

'It's with heavy hearts we've made a decision to close down Paragon, ' Epic Games announced in the game's forum.

Sadly for the Paragon, rumours of Fortnite killing the game appear to be true, as Epic recently posted a statement confirming that they were shutting the game down on April 26.

"After careful consideration, and many hard internal debates, we feel there isn't a clear path for us to grow Paragon into a MOBA that retains enough players to be sustainable", the "Paragon" development team explained in their news update, offering an apology along the way.

One of the downsides to the massive success of Epic Games' Fortnite and specifically its Battle Royale mode which has been able to effectively compete head to head with current gaming darling PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, is that other Epic projects have really suffered. Paragon was, for all intents and purposes, trying to cash in on the popularity of SMITE and it seemed like decent competition at first - but it was plagued by development focused too heavily on trying to turn a profit and not enough communication with their players. If you're an active Paragon player, then you have 3 months left to enjoy the game. I put forward the idea that Epic keep the servers for paragon open even if they leave the game as it is right now I would be more than happy.

"Paragon" was released into early access in March of 2016, and has since grown a small but loyal fanbase. However, players will have to request the refund - it won't happen automatically.

Interestingly, Epic will be refunding anybody who spent money on the game's microtransactions. If you're playing on console, you'll need to link your Epic account to your PSN or Xbox Live. However, as an online-based game, Epic warns, "As the player population continues to decrease, matchmaking times and quality will further degrade".
