ED raids Karti Chidambaram's properties

Aircel-Maxis case ED found nothing in raids says Chidambaram

He has now been called by the agency on Tuesday, January 16.

Karti is also being probed by the ED in an another money laundering case pertaining to the INX media deal.

It had lodged an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against the accused named in the CBI complaint which included Karti, INX media and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, among others.

If everyone who reads our reporting, helps to support it, our future would be much more secure and we will be able to keep our and your perspective going.

Karti is alleged to have received Rs 3.5 crore from Mumbai-based INX media, now 9X Media, for helping it get the FIPB clearance when it was run by the Mukerjeas.

The CBI has said it has also recovered vouchers of Rs 10 lakh which were allegedly paid for the services.

Karti and others have been charged with criminal conspiracy, receiving illegal gratification, cheating, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct. However, Mr Chidambaram denies the charge saying, due procedures were followed. The investigative agency is looking into "the circumstances" in which P Chidambaram, in his capacity as the finance minister then, had granted the Foreign Investment Promotion Board approvals.

The party said Congress leaders would not be "cowed down or bow in face of such malicious and wilful attempts to browbeat, bulldoze or overawe".

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has issued an official statement following raids at his son Karti Chidambaram's premises at Delhi and Chennai.

Issuing a statement, Chidambaram said that there was no FIR against him or his son in the Aircel-Maxis case and hence, the ED had no jurisdiction or power to conduct the raids.

The raids were conducted at one location in Delhi and four in Chennai. Nothing was found, nothing was seized. The former Union Minister claimed the officers were left "embarrassed" and "apologetic" as they could not find anything at his house.

Mr Chidambaram also questioned the agency's jurisdiction to investigate the matter. Karti is alleged to have received investment from Mauritius in return. Officials are looking into how telecom firm Aircel was sold to a Malaysian communication giant Maxis.
