EasyJet's CEO cuts pay to match female predecessor

The new CEO of EasyJet, Johan Lundgren, has made a decision to lower his salary "as a gesture to equal pay", according to British airline reported in a statement. This is to match what former CEO Carolyn McCall was paid, she left the company past year to take the top job at ITV.

Johan Lundgren's starting salary was £740,000, but he asked for it to be reduced to £706,000.

The airline said the gap was not due to unequal pay for the same work but was because pilots are paid more than other staff and there are far more male than female pilots.

"We at EasyJet are absolutely committed to providing equal pay and opportunities for men and women", said Lundgren.

"I want to ratify my commitment to equalize gender imbalance in our pilot community, since it is this same one that increases wage gap between men and women".

He was previously a deputy chief executive at travel group Tui.

The gender pay gap in EasyJet is now 51.7%, but the budget airline says this is not because of unequal pay for women.

EasyJet's staggering imbalance is driven less by men and women in the same positions making different salaries than it is by the fact the company has more women in low-paying jobs, such as flight attendants.

Lundgren said: "I want us not just to hit our target that 20% of our new pilots should be female by 2020 but to go further than this in the future".

"Like all airlines pilots make up a large proportion of easyJet's employees, they are paid more highly than our other communities and, most materially, 94% of them are male", said the airline.

The request comes ahead of rules set to be implemented in April, which will require all United Kingdom companies with at least 250 staff to publish the gap between male and female employees. The company recognizes that re is still room for improvement, and objective is that, for 2020, 20% of new pilots are women.
