Dreamers' Protections Could 'Morph Into' Citizenship in 10,12 Years

Senator Jeff Flake seen here at a White House meeting early this month with President Donald Trump says a deal to regularize many undocumented immigrants is in the making

On Monday the U.S. Congress passed a measure to reopen the government and fund it through February 8 after Democrats received a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would allow debate on an immigration deal. I truly appreciate President Trump making it clear that he supports a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.

The White House will encourage the Senate to bring the proposal to a vote.

DACA, which was instituted by President Donald Trump's predecessor Barack Obama in 2012, protects from deportation hundreds of thousands of immigrants who arrived in the country illegally as children.

Under his forthcoming immigration plan, Trump told reporters that protections for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would "morph into" citizenship over that period.

"After decades of inaction by Congress, it's time we work together to solve this issue once and for all", Sanders told journalists Wednesday.

Trump said in September he was scrapping DACA, throwing the future of those it covers into doubt, but delayed enforcement to give Congress until March to craft a lasting solution.

Sanders wouldn't say Wednesday whether the upcoming White House framework will include a pathway to citizenship for young Dreamers, but she said it will include specifics on border security, calls to cancel the visa lottery and seeks to prevent immigrants from sponsoring family members. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. and Sen.

Trump is also expected to discuss the immigration debate at his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Trump also told reporters that he requires $25 billion to build the border wall between the USA and Mexico, one of his campaign promises.

"If the Republicans said we are ending same-sex marriage, but we promise Democrats a vote later; or we approve of oil drilling in every national park, but you'll have a vote later - do you think the Democrats would say yes?", Gutierrez asked.
