'Dreamers' get reprieve as judge blocks Trump's DACA plan

Schumer are now allies, both attempting to push the Trump Administration toward a deal for a so called "Clean" DREAM act that is NOT tied to one of Mr. Trump's key campaign pledges - a border wall.

"We were hoping for that, but the president is not prepared to do that at this moment", Durbin said.

In Judge Alsup's ruling to keep DACA active, he cited several reasons for making his decision, including two times President Trump publically expressed his support for the DACA program in September.

"The so-called bipartisan DACA deal presented yesterday to myself and a group of Republican Senators and Congressmen was a big step backwards", Trump tweeted.

Trump had said he would end DACA after six months to give Congress the chance to pass legislation that would protect the "Dreamers", or DACA program members. "It was fine", Trump told his Cabinet colleagues.

"I can tell you that a deal has not been reached", said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Becerra, flanked by members of the legal team that has argued the case, said it remained up to Congress and the president to find a permanent solution, however. "We're going to address the border enforcement and security and the wall".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer doesn't want to link DACA protections with a border wall.

"Let's focus, and if we focus on these four issues I think we can come up with an agreement", Cuellar said of the upcoming talks.

Reports of his language that referred to people of color from other countries created a fire storm of criticism from both major parties and critics overseas who said they could not be described as anything but racist. Trump nearly continually moves the goal posts on what he wants, shifts the terms of the debate and misstates what's actually contained in the legislation that is before Congress. Ideally, this legislation would keep the government from shutting down on January 19, since it fulfills both Republican and Democrat budget desires.

"I'm appealing to everyone in the room to put the country before party, and to sit down and negotiate and to compromise, and let's see if we can get something done", the US President said.

As DACA recipients wait for the courts to work through the issue, Tullius said they're already standing up, which RAICES encourages. "We need the wall for safety".

Almost a year into Trump's presidency, members of Congress are still struggling to relate to the unorthodox Trump and his spontaneous, often crude remarks.

Later, The Washington Post's Ashley Parker observed that the official White House transcript of the exchange did not include his "Yeah, I would like to do it" line - how convenient.
