Day 5 Snapshot from the Australian Open

Australian Open 15-year-old Marta Kostyuk's Winning Streak Takes Her to 3rd Round

With the temperature hitting 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) for the second straight day, fourth-seeded Svitolina reached the fourth round at the season-opening major for the first time with the 6-2, 6-2 win on Rod Laver Arena.

"It's very special to me, I always love coming to Australia but I never got beyond the third round", Svitolina said on court.

"First time I heard about her when she won here", said Svitolina.

Kostyuk has become the youngest tennis player since 1996 to reach the third round at Australian Open.

But she produced a nervous, error-strewn display against Svitolina and was inconsolable as she returned to the locker room. "She's a great fighter, she fought right until the end and has a great future".

One of five players who have a chance to finish the Australian Open as world number one, she is now the only seed left in her section of the draw.

The Ukranian world No.4 is through to the last 16 for the loss of just two sets in eight matches in 2018 after capturing a tour-best five titles past year.

She had nine double faults, including on match point, and only got 37 percent of her first serves into play.

"Well, a lot", she said. I'm glad I came back.

The step-up to facing a top 10 player was too much for Kostyuk on Friday.

Allertova's reward will be a match against either fourth seed Elina Svitolina or 15-year-old sensation Marta Kostyuk who clash later Thursday.

Kyle Edmund was the first man into the fourth round, overcoming Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6 (0), 3-6, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 in 3 ½ hours on open court in the peak of the heat.

Kostyuk was given a wildcard into qualifying after winning the junior title 12 months ago. She has her mum, she has coaches who do an unbelievable job.

She will face Belgium's Elise Mertens or Alize Cornet of France for a place in the quarterfinals.
