Chandigarh Stalking Case: Vikas Barala Gets Bail

Chandigarh stalking case Prime accused Vikas Barala granted bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court

Vikas Barala, the son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala, today got bail from Punjab and Haryana High Court, five months after he was arrested in connection with a stalking case in Chandigah.

Barala and Kumar had allegedly started following Kundu in their SUV here at around 12.20 am on August 5 in Chandigarh. The court was also informed that cross-examination of the woman was over and in no manner could the accused influence the trial.

The court had deferred its bail plea hearing to January 11 in December. Barala, accused of stalking radio jockey Varnika Kundu, was arrested by the Chandigarh Police after the case generated huge public anger.

In August previous year, Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a senior IAS officer, complained that Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar stalked her on the streets of Chandigarh while she was in her auto.

The latest development comes a day after Varnika's cross-examination had concluded in the district courts in Chandigarh. The lower court in Chandigarh had rejected Vikas's bail application four times. "And if the court thinks it's OK to release him on bail, then I don't challenge that decision".

Last month, Justice Lisa Gill had instructed a cellular operator to provide call details between the complainant, 29-year-old Varnika Kundu, and her IAS father VS Kundu, to the trial court, as sought by Barala's counsel.

The woman had accused Vikas Barala (23) and his friend Kumar (27) of stalking and attempting to abduct her.

However, they were arrested again on August 9 under sections 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) and 511 (attempt to commit punishable offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
