California man confesses to 1993 killing in TV interview, seeks forgiveness

Hawkins told KRCR of Redding, Calif., that he and two accomplices robbed and killed 20-year-old Frank Wesley McAlister, whose slaying was unsolved for almost 25 years.

They then robbed McAlister and stabbed him to death, leaving his body at the scene of the crime and dumping his vehicle in a Costco parking lot.

'Horrible, horrible, horrible, absolute horror, absolutely horrible since that day, ' he told KRCR-TV.

"He refused to answer any questions about the case itself but said he wanted people to know that he had found God, and that is what led him to finally do the right thing and confess".

An emotional Hawkins didn't go into details about the actual crime, but said that he wanted to do the right thing, saying that his relationship with God and the weight of the past 25 years led him to confess.

In 1993, investigators learned Hawkins and the Culvers were the last people to see the victim alive, but they denied any involvement in his disappearance, and did not have any information about his whereabouts, the release said. "It was murder", Hawkins, of Shingletown, told KRCR reporter Courtney Kreider.

All three individuals now reside in the Shasta County jail-on charges of murder, robbery and burglary. "Frank never got to have a life, but we were teenagers and now I'm 44 and still haven't even had a life and now most likely won't anyway".

Hawkins, Shanna Culver and Curtis Culver were booked on charges of murder and are being held at the Shasta County Jail.

KRCR-TV reported that police said one of the Culvers has also confessed, but declined to specify which one.

Now he wants redemption as a born-again. "I've been through hell my whole life because of this".

Expressing his remorse, Hawkins maintained in the televised interview that he lost his life as well after committing the murder.

"All three. were contacted and interviewed multiple times by investigators during the past 25 years, however all three maintained their innocence", the complaint says. "By the time I got there, his father had passed away".

Hawkins said he seeks forgiveness. "I just need someone that cares. I just hope the community can also forgive me", he said. Redding police said Hawkins and two others, Curtis Culver and Shanna Culver, lured McAlister to Shingletown under the guise of selling him drugs.

Shanna Culver, who was 16 at the time of the killing, told police this week that the four were in the vehicle, but that McAlister dropped her, her brother and Hawkins off near a Redding park - similar to the story police said the trio had told before.
