Britain's European Union days are 'over', French FM tells Japan firms

U.S. President Donald Trump gestures as he speaks during the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos Switzerland

U.S. President Donald Trump would take a "tougher" approach to Brexit negotiations than Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May, he said in a television interview to be broadcast later on Sunday.

In his first global interview since assuming office in January 2017, Trump pledged to conclude a trade deal with the United Kingdom.

He stressed that after March 2019, it would be up to Parliament and the Government to decide upon the areas where Britain should diverge from European Union policy and those where it could "work very closely" with the bloc.

In this context, Trump's offer of a post-Brexit trade deal with London that, he said, would be "very swift", appears to represent an incentive to harden May's line in talks with Brussels.

"Of course maintaining access to each other's markets on current terms means we will replicate the effects of the EU customs union during the implementation period".

He added that this "would not solve" numerous problems but would only "create new uncertainty about when we will leave". The EU officials, however, note that the texts agreed previous year clearly show that both sides will be bound by the principle of "sincere cooperation" while pursuing EU law.

Trump last week insisted his relationship with May is "really great", pushing back on what he called a "false rumor" of tensions between the US and United Kingdom.

Trump has recently cancelled a trip to London, the reason for which he said was that he didn't like the relocation of the USA embassy there.

Trump also said in the interview that he had anticipated the Brexit referendum result because of many Britons' concerns over immigration - also a key plank of his USA election campaign.

"The European Union has treated the United States very unfairly when it came to trade. and it may morph into something very big", he said. "I would have taken a tougher stand in getting out", he added in the interview. "We have the same ideas, the same ideals", he said before turning to speak to May directly.

Earlier this month, Trump pulled out of attending the open of a new US Embassy in London, claiming that he didn't want support a deal by the Obama administration to sell the old embassy for "peanuts" - calling it a "bad deal". "Whilst we want a deep and special economic partnership with the European Union after we leave, these could not be described as very modest changes". In the last 10 days, both of them have expressed their frustration to close allies that Theresa May won't make a decision; that Britain is at a nation-defining moment in its history and that there is no real leadership.
