Bowling Green man who attacked Sen. Rand Paul charged with felony assault

Paul and Boucher are longtime neighbors in Bowling Green. While Boucher is already awaiting sentencing after reaching a plea deal on local charges, he's now been charged with a federal crime, as well.

Paul, a Republican, was wearing headphones while mowing his lawn in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on November 3 when his neighbor Rene Boucher, 58, became angered by seeing the 55-year-old senator stack brush near Boucher's property, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement.

"Assaulting a member of Congress is an offense we take very seriously", Minkler said in a statement. "Those who choose to commit such an act will be held accountable". Boucher admitted the assault but denied it was politically motivated.

Boucher has signed a plea agreement admitting assaulting a member of Congress resulting in personal injury, which is a felony under federal law, officials said.

Boucher, a retired anesthesiologist in his late 50s, already faces a misdemeanor assault charge in state court in Kentucky.

Court documents claim Paul was mowing his yard on November 3 and wearing headphones when Boucher, his neighbor, "had enough" after witnessing Paul stacking brush on a pile near Boucher's property. A close friend of Paul's said the senator had gotten off his riding lawn mower to remove a limb when he was tackled from behind. Paul was wearing headphones at the time.

Baker said that Boucher and Paul didn't see eye to eye over the care of grass, trees and other aspects of their lots.

Paul returned to the Senate two weeks after the incident.

Boucher had "had enough", he said, according to the plea agreement.

Louisville's FBI office investigated the case.
