The deceased were identified as Sonal Bhagwan Surati, Janhawi Harish Surati and Sanskriti Mayavanshi - all 17 years old, the three lived in Masauli, in Ambedkar Nagar of Dahanu, metres from each other's homes.

The Coast Guard has diverted ships which were at sea. The school is said to be KL Ponda high school from Dahanu. This is 110 km far from Mumbai. He also confirmed that coast guard were using the services of helicopter for search operation.

The tragedy occurred during a low-tide, enabling the rescuers to reach the site quickly, and "save precious lives", said an ICG spokesperson. "When all of them came on one side, the boat tilted and consequently capsized". "Our deep condolences and thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones", he said in a tweet. Even the local fishermen got their boats for the rescue operations.

By the end of the day, Coast Guard personnel and local boatmen rescued 28 students and two drivers.

The toll is likely to release, reports said.

However, there have been three casualties in the incident, it said.

Narnaware said the bodies of two girls have been found and a search is on for those missing.
