Blue Jays Josh Donaldson avoid arbitration with record deal

According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, the Toronto Blue Jays and All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson have agreed to terms on deal to avoid arbitration. The 2015 American League MVP is coming off a relatively underwhelming year by his own high standards, and was limited to only 113 games by multiple injuries.

The superstar third baseman surpassed Bryce Harper's previous mark of $21.625 million and earned himself a $6 million raise over the $17 million he received in 2017. He is eligible for free agency after this season. The team will have to make a decision on his future after this season as the 32-year old is a free agent at the end of the season. That gave the Blue Jays some cost certainty for two of Donaldson's arb years, but it also allowed Donaldson to cash in on that final arbitration year, which he's reportedly done in a big way.

Toronto also agreed Friday to one-year deals with outfielder Ezequiel Carrera ($1.9 million) and left-hander Aaron Loup ($1,812,500).

After three straight years as an All-Star and two with top-five finishes in All-Star voting Donaldson's production was slightly down in 2017, partially due to an early-season calf injury that kept him out for six weeks. He began the year hot, hitting four home runs in April, his high for any single month of the year. "The fact of the matter is, I really enjoy where I'm at right now and I enjoy being a Toronto Blue Jay and enjoy what we've been able to build in this organization and I'm very happy".

With Sanchez and Travis now settled, the only players that the Blue Jays haven't settled with on a deal to avoid arbitration are closer Roberto Osuna, center fielder Kevin Pillar, reliever Dominic Leone, and Marcus Stroman.
